The Brantford Galaxy lost two games during the long weekend to drop to 10th place in the Canadian Soccer League standings 10 games into the season.
Following a 4-1 loss to SC Toronto on the road on Canada Day, the Galaxy lost a penalty filled matchup against Brampton City United 1-0 at home on Sunday.
"I don't know if something was in their heads," assistant coach Tomo Dancetovic said. "I am a little upset right now."
The Galaxy were down to 10 men after Sasa Vidovic drew his second yellow card in the 39th minute of the first half. Brantford was down to nine men after Nenad Begovic got the boot in the 38th minute of the second half.
In all, the home team earned eight yellow cards and two reds during the contest, while Brampton United received a single yellow card.
"Nothing went right," Dancetovic said. "The guys got nervous and that resulted in two red cards."
The first 30 minutes of the game featured back and forth play, but not many scoring chances. The teams traded scoring chances toward the end of the first half, including a hit post by the Galaxy in the 32nd minute.
Ranko Golijanan had the next chance for the Galaxy, when a tic-tac-toe play found him alone in front of the goal, but a United defender deflected his shot.
With time running down in the half, United forwards kept extended pressure on the Galaxy defence after Vidovic was ejected.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 43rd minute, when United's Richard West slid into a centred ball and drove it past Galaxy goaltender Vladimir Markotic.
Brampton nearly took a 2-0 lead into the half before a second goal was called back due to an offside call in injury time.
In the second half, United's Denny Velastegui was granted a penalty kick on a Stanko Karacic yellow card. But Markotic predicted the path of the ball, low and to his right, perfectly to preserve the score.
Golijanin would have several breakaway opportunities in the second half, but was either stopped by United keeper Roy Blanche or called offside. The Galaxy players, coaches and fans vehemently argued several of the offside calls.
Though the Galaxy put up a fight when they were down one player, after losing Begovic with fewer than 10 minutes to play it was just a matter of waiting for the final whistle.
Dancetovic, upset with the loss, said his team has a lot to think about before next Sunday's road game against the North York Astros.
"Comparing this game with our (June 26) win against Mississauga, this is two different teams," he said. "We have a lot of things to work on."
The Galaxy are now 3-7-0 on the season with eight goals scored and 18 goals scored against.
