Galaxy drop opener
Galaxy Goalkeeper Melford James
Brantford Galaxy coach Ron Davidson knew Sunday’s Canadian Soccer League opener would be a tough one.
After only two weeks of preparation, the Galaxy fell 1 - 0 to the York Region Shooters.
Shooters came out of the gate quick, scoring in the eighth minute of the game, when Aundrae Rollins struck the ball from 30 yards out. The shot, ripped to the top corner eluded everyone, including keeper Melford James Jr., who had no chance on the play.
Despite the goal, the Galaxy settled in and shared possession time with the Shooters, which continued throughout the second half.
The Galaxy’s best opportunity came in the 75th minute, when a Damian Scott free kick was headed by Preston Corporal, but stopped by Shooters keeper Camillo Benzi. Benzi was forced to be busy the last several minutes, as the Galaxy pressed but couldn’t get the equalizer.
“I’m very pleased with the teams performance and saw a lot of positives,” Davidson said. “This is the first time the squad was on the field and together as a complete unit and once.”
He said with some training, the Galaxy will improve greatly given that they should have come away from this game just short.
